Welcome to the Hampden-Sydney Volunteer Fire & Rescue website. If you are interested in joining, please complete the application below.

Once you submit your application, our membership committee will reach out to you and schedule a prelimanry interview to discuss your interest in volunteering with the department. After your interview, the membership committee will contact you about the status of your application and the next steps in the process.

We offer two membership roles:

  • Operational

    • Permitted to operate in all aspects of the department, and responds and actively participates in calls for service. An operational member may change their operational classification at any time given approval of the Chief and a written record of the membership change is provided to the Secretary. Must be aged 16 years of age or older. (Junior membership is offered by HSVFR with restricitons.)

  • Supportive

    • Permitted to operate in administration, fundraising, public events, vehicle and station upkeep, and any other supportive role as assigned by the Board of Directors and a Line Officer. Supportive members may respond non-emergency, in the department’s designated support vehicle, to calls for service in a “Rehab” capacity only, given the member possesses the appropriate EVOC Certification and has completed the unit taskbook.


Operational Memberships include:

  • Fire & EMS

    • Shall participate in both Fire and EMS operations with the expectation of being active in both activities and pursue certification within both fields.

  • Fire Only

    • Shall participate in Fire operations only with the expectation of being active in operations and pursue certification within this field.

  • EMS Only

    • Shall participate in EMS operations only with the expectation of being active in operations and pursue certification within this field.


Supportive Memberships include:

  • Associate

    • A member who does not wish to qualify as a firefighter or EMT but has an interest in supporting HSVFD’s general purpose. They may attend meetings and join in discussions on administrative business. These members may also hold any administrative office on HSVFD’s Board of Directors. These members may also perform tasks as described in the "Supportive Membership" description.
