About us

Welcome to The Hampden-Sydney Volunteer Fire Department (Company 2). Hampden-Sydney Volunteer Fire Department (HSVFD) is a non-profit organization located in the heart of Prince Edward County in Hampden-Sydney, Virginia just outside the campus of Hampden-Sydney College. HSVFD was reorganized in October 1970 and incorporated in 1982 as a Prince Edward County fire department to provide protection to central areas of Prince Edward County and the College.

Currently, HSVFD covers over 75 square miles with approximately 6000 residents in our district. HSVFD also serves as the second-due company to most of the Town of Farmville (Co.1) and supports the other volunteer companies in Prince Edward County. HSVFD was originally created to provide fire suppression services, but has expanded operations with an Emergency First Responder program that coordinates with both transport agencies in Prince Edward in the provision of emergency pre-hospital care.

We are a 100% volunteer department with 75% of our membership being comprised of college students from Hampden-Sydney College. We pride ourselves on professionalism and quick responses to emergency situations. The Department is operated by corporation officers: a President, Vice President/Secretary, and Treasurer. Fire ground operations are directed by the Chief, Assistant Chief, Captain, and two Lieutenants. EMS Operations are directed by the Chief, Assistant Chief, EMS Captain, and EMS Lieutenant. All offices and positions are elected by the active membership of the Department. The station is located at the south end of campus, next to the College's water tower on South Boundary Rd.

Business meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the fire house. Training drills are held all other Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. If you have any questions about who we are or what we do, please contact us and we will respond with an answer as soon as possible!
